Black Bears

Over the years bear sightings within our town’s borders have increased. On July 14, 2011 the Borough of Raritan was visited by a Black Bear who wandered into our town. The bear that weighed 296 pounds was first spotted on First Ave in the early morning hours. We received numerous calls reporting sightings of this bear in other areas of the town. At 7:24am the Black Bear was located approx 25 ft up a tree in the rear yard of 89 Anderson Street. With the assistance of local emergency agencies and the NJ Division of Fish and Wildlife our bear was removed unharmed from the tree and was later released back into the wild. Although encounters with black bears in small towns are rare they do occur.
